March News – Plains of Change – ol Donyo Lodge, Kenya
There is a fresh feeling at oL Donyo this month with the start of the rains that have brought welcome change to the Chyulu Hills. The land has awoken from a long, dry slumber and is celebrating with sounds and sights we haven’t seen for a while.
We are always happy to see elephants at the lodge waterhole but seeing them less is a good sign that they are finding water elsewhere. Also, the rain has bought in some family groups of females and young in this primarily male-dominated area (which may also explain why most of the bulls are not around).
The Plains turning green inspired us to go a little greener ourselves with the introduction of our own vegetable and herb garden, proudly dubbed “the Green Gate Garden”. The fertile soil and perfect climate has expedited the growth of planted seeds and soon the guests will be able to enjoy homegrown vegetables in the menus.
Slowly making their way back are the zebras and hartebeests and they are a welcome sight after their time away from the plains searching for wetter areas.
And to say the birds have sprung to life is an understatement: the morning chorus across the plains is one alarm clock guests truly welcome.
During a morning hike, the elusive Black-backed Puffback made an appearance along with Striped Kingfishers, Purple Grenadiers and the beautiful Black-chested Snake Eagle.
Our friendly resident genet cat (named Janet the Genet) has been having a lot of fun feasting on the big crickets the rains have bought and we have never seen the geckos so stuffed full!
We are excited to see the changes throughout April and if March is an indication of what’s to come, it is going to be spectacular!
