WELCOME TO GREAT PLAINS EXPEDITIONS – BOTSWANA
There are few things more satisfying than settling down in a tent. With just the thickness of canvas between you and Africa, the grunt of lions not that far away, the rumbles of elephants or a lonesome hyena calling to make contact seeping in. The Great Plains Expeditions – Botswana is a 4-night scheduled departure Botswana cross country safari experience. We proudly offer guests these safari departures seasonally each year.
“After 35 years of filming big cats, I remember those moments with a great sense of romance and nostalgia. Those special moments were authentic and uncluttered. My mind wanders to those filming days when Beverly and I slept in our vehicle or under a tree. We only bought tents later! I do not expect you to do that on a Great Plains – Expeditions departure. This cross country safari experience connects you to that nature that most captivated us. Those moments made us get lost in the essence of what Africa truly offers explorers. This is what I want to share with you.” says Dereck Joubert, CEO of Great Plains Conservation.
The Great Plains Expeditions – Botswana is a regular set departure, 4-night Botswana cross country safari. Each departure traverses the private Selinda Reserve in either an easterly or westerly direction.
Guests will experience the best wildlife sightings and interactions the Selinda Reserve has to offer. Wildlife viewing opportunities range from open game drive vehicles, guided walking opportunities and even canoeing along the Selinda Spillway when water levels allow.
Each cross country safari moves through the highest density of elephants globally. Other iconic African species to record include leopard, pangolin and wild dog. In the spirit of a genuine expedition, we aim to involve our guests in data collection. We have spot pattern analysis tools and software available for identification purposes, sometimes using special DNA test kits! All these iconic species are targets of poachers across Africa and Asia. We need eyes on the ground. For too long, there has not been the opportunity for travellers to assist in data collection on a meaningful basis.
Our new Great Plains Expeditions brand fills that gap and help us fill in the points to add to our scientific understanding for future conservation.
Treat yourself to our film, The Soul of the Elephant. That film showed just how magnificent these elephant herds are.
Each 4-night departure stays at three beautiful camps located deep inside the Selinda Reserve. At the 2nd camp, we spend two nights. Excellent walking and canoeing (water levels permitting) safari opportunities are possible from here.
The heart of Selinda is one of the most remote places in northern Botswana. It is a land that most people only see from 7500 feet above the ground as they air transfer from camp to camp. Here the smell of the earth and vegetation, the calls and the sights of almost forgotten days of authentic wildness still exist.
Move slowly along the Selinda Spillway’s winding channels and explore some of Africa’s most incredible buffalo and elephant concentrations. You may see cheetah too. The days also cut through some of the best, and possibly even final, large concentrations of sable and roan antelope left in Botswana.
We are going back to the style of old traditional expedition safaris, reminiscent of the Out of Africa days, where you made a trip to Africa to explore and collect data and enhance the world’s knowledge. A more immersive dive into what makes complex ecosystems work is necessary now and will add the authenticity we try to deliver.
