Safari in Botswana

Your Botswana safari experiences with Great Plains Conservation will remain with you forever.

“Just like those precious few photographs you keep in your wallet and personal albums, weathered as they may become — they are all unforgettable. A journey like this is life-changing. We want you to choose well.”

– Dereck Joubert, CEO of Great Plains Conservation

Dereck Joubert’s journey with his wife and the co-founder of Great Plains Conservation, Beverly Joubert, started in Botswana. They initially settled in the private Selinda Reserve before ending up in the private Duba Concession. This remains their current home.

Botswana is famous for its incredible wildlife, and our Camps prove this fame is well-deserved. Home to the world’s only inland delta, the Okavango Delta, and the Selinda Spillway, Botswana has an incredibly distinctive landscape, accompanied by the unique flora and fauna that have adapted to this land.

This one-of-a-kind landscape allows for unparalleled safari experiences. At Botswana’s Great Plains Conservation safari camps, you can view the abundant wildlife on safari drives, guided walks, canoes, mekoro, and boating. This is sure to provide a safari that will never be forgotten.

Great Plains Conservation’s Botswana camps epitomise the wonder the country has to offer. We have several safari camps in Botswana, offering experiences spread across almost 160,000 private, conserved land hectares.

The Selinda Reserve is 130 000-hectares of private land and is famous for its large herds of elephants, regular sightings of African wild dogs, and the lion pride, as seen in the film ‘Birth of a Pride’ by Dereck and Beverly Joubert. The Selinda Reserve is home to our Selinda Camp, the 2-bedroom Selinda Suite, and Selinda Explorers Camp.

Selinda Camp is a Réserve-Collection and Relais & Châteaux member safari camp. Its design is inspired by elephants, making it the perfect camp for a private, luxurious safari experience.

Zarafa Camp and The Dhow Suite at Zarafa are also Relais & Châteaux members in the exclusive Selinda Reserve. These Réserve-Collection camps overlook the Zibadianja Lagoon, which is a water source for a tremendous population of wildlife. Zarafa Camp is said to be the best and most innovative environmentally friendly camp. These camps provide you with serenity and luxury in the heart of the wilderness.

Selinda Explorers Camp, an Explorer-Collection safari camp, offers a more down-to-earth safari experience. This camp is for those looking for an incredible wildlife experience with a real 1930s-inspired explorer feel.

Also in the Selinda Reserve, on its western boundary, at the intersection of the upper Okavango Delta water system and the Selinda Spillway, lies Okavango Explorers Camp. This Explorer-Collection safari camp is located in prime predator and elephant habitat. It is surrounded by some of the highest concentrations of wildlife in the region, including rare species like eland, roan and sable.

A quick air transfer away lies the private Duba Concession, home to Duba Plains Camp, the 2-bedroomed Duba Plains Suite, and Duba Explorers Camp.

Duba Concession is a private, 33,000-hectare network of floodplains, palm-studded islands and woodlands. This landscape is mainly water-based and home to a vast range of rare aquatic antelope and Africa’s classic and iconic predators.

Duba Plains Camp and the 2-bedroomed Duba Plains Suite are Great Plains Conservation Réserve-Collection and Relais & Châteaux member safari camps. Duba Plains is styled with inspiration from the 1920s. Here, you can enjoy watching wildlife pass you by while relaxing on your private veranda.

Duba Explorers Camp, tucked away in the northeast corner of the private Duba Concession and only accessible by helicopter, is surrounded by permanent floodplains. This Explorer-Collection Camp is situated on an island surrounded by the renowned Okavango Delta and enjoys a separate traversing area to Duba Plains Camp, ensuring an uninterrupted private safari.

Sitatunga Private Island, located on a remote island northwest of the Duba Concession, epitomises privacy and luxury.

The design of Sitatunga Private Island tells the story of the Okavango, using only recycled or reclaimed wood in its construction. The raised, wrap-around railway sleeper decking offers unmatched views of rare aquatic antelope, birds, and predators.

Accommodating a maximum of eight guests at a time, you are ensured a relaxing, quiet and private safari. The 2-bedroom Sitatunga Private Island Suite is also located here for those wanting that extra level of grandeur.
