Welcome to Sitatunga Private Island Suite

“Sitatunga Private Island Suite is a sanctuary. It is a private refuge where you can marvel at the elusive sitatunga.

The first time I saw a sitatunga antelope, I fell in love with these shaggy creatures, which live in the nearby reeds, islands, and inland delta. With their elongated hooves, they seem like an impossible animal, really.

When my friend Lance Dixon and I scouted this island, we saw a dozen of these animals and the name “Sitatunga” leapt out at me.

I know you will enjoy every moment, as I do.”

The Camp

Located deep within Botswana’s Okavango Delta, on a secluded and remote island, Sitatunga Private Island Suite is an ideal refuge to include in any safari plans. The area is rich in birding. Head out on a boat to view elephants, crocodiles, and hippos all day, every day. Enjoy a guided walk around the island where the camp is located.

The 2-bedroom Sitatunga Private Island Suite is extraordinary and fits perfectly into our highest luxury African safari camp level offering, the Great Plains Conservation Réserve-Collection. It is also Botswana’s newest member of Relais & Châteaux.

Located on a private island next to the Sitatunga Private Island, it is one of the few locations where one can still see these rare aquatic antelope, which can be seen from camp and by boat, which is the main activity in addition to guided walking.

Like the nearby main camp, which is within easy walking distance, the private 2-bedroom Sitatunga Private Island Suite is very ‘Robinson Crusoe, deserted island-ish’ in design, with purposeful ‘salvage’ inspired reference. The Suite’s design is complete with giant basket shapes as a nod to the Bayei and other local Okavango fishing ancestries.

Thick shaggy thatch cover canvas roofs and walls. There is thick pole woodwork inspired by sailing ship masts salvaged from a shipwreck, but the very spacious inner floorspace is some of the largest we have ever built.

This private 2-bedroomed suite is set up very high in the ebony trees, a traditional way to seek and find safety and take advantage of the views. Rest in the cool shade or your private pool, spot sitatunga.

The Sitatunga Private Island Suite offers unending views across the lagoon in front of camp, influencing the blue water theme. Vintage Persian carpets, blue trade bead curtains, soft flowing silk and linen curtaining that picks up the breeze complete the interiors.
