From the fresh air out in the open on safari to the crisp, fresh garden-to-table salads, yoga, ‘jungle gyms’ and exercise, you would be forgiven for thinking that a Great Plains safari was a visit to a spa.
In fact, it is.
For those who wish to make the safari about feeling better, experiencing the sensations of life at its best, and feeding their soul, our wholesome, clean food offerings and activities all lean towards offering a healthy mind, in a healthy body, in a healthy environment.
This is our motto for life. But it goes beyond that.
Each of our safari camps has a unique wellness offering. All have exercise equipment in the suites and tents. We recently opened a new gym at ol Donyo Lodge and the gym in Zarafa is well used, (and often shared with passing elephants).
Massages in each camp provide the ‘slowing down’ as a counter to the ‘high energy’ enjoyed out in the bush, and relief from the hours of sitting or travel.
Some guests at Mara Plains I spoke to recently were in awe when, during their massages in the river just below them, a baby hippo was born. The hippo was positioned facing upstream of his mother, so the current consistently pushed him up against her.
The monkeys at Mara Toto Tree Camp cocked their heads from their perches nearby, curious but peaceful, as Beverly had her outdoor massage there.
Meditations in ol Donyo Lodge’s sunken hide with elephants mere feet away, along with cycling and horse riding, walking in various locations, and sleeping under the stars in our Starbeds all contribute to well-being.
I cannot imagine a happier, healthier way to live, where the rumble of elephants soothes you and the thrill of spotting cheetahs during the day invigorates you, where wholesome cuisine nourishes you and fresh dawns uplift your spirit.
Wellness is often thought of as pampering, but at Great Plains, it forms part of everyday life.
